If you want to fall in love with this country again…

… get out there, in it. Dive in. Live.

Be a part of it. Don’t put it off.  Don’t wait for the perfect time or something better to come along.  It’s good.  Now. Go. Get out there.  Have fun. Do good. Be nice.

It’s not perfect. Nothing is.  No one is.  Not me. Not you. Forgive. Accept. Allow. Appreciate. Stop judging. Criticizing. Demanding. Putting down.

Look up instead. And out. It’s amazing. Truly. Check it out. You can be scared but get out there anyway. Try. Slow down.  Look around. It’s beautiful. People are good.

Meet new folks.  Learn new things. Hear new stories. Listen to old ones again. Be curious. Ask questions. Everyone has a story. Don’t be afraid to share yours. Knock on a door and make a new friend. Open your door, your eyes, your heart. Play together. Pray together. Participate. Join in.

Stop whining. That doesn’t work. I know. I tried. Plenty.

Instead… start smiling. Listening.  Laughing. Learning. Loving. Sharing. Don’t be stingy, with your time, your things, your love. Find common ground. Look for goodness.  There’s so much of it.  Do something good. Something beautiful. Something brave or brilliant, kind or caring. Inclusive, not separating. Something for a stranger. An elder. A child in need. Something big or something small.  Just something.  What do you have to give, to share, to contribute?

There is so much. We have so much. Give more. Take less. Trust more.  Assume less. Look for magic. Make magic. Find beauty. Be in awe. Smell the flowers. Watch the sunrise. Listen to birds sing and children play. If it’s broken, try to fix it.  If it’s wrong, try and make it right. Help out.  Clean up after yourself. Be polite. Mind your manners. Let it go.

Notes to self… to remind myself over and over and over again, as I’m out there, in it, falling in love with this land all over again.

  1. You are definitely practicing the words you write. Looks like you got out of your scary ordeal in Idaho. Hoping more trail angels will always be with you. Your positive thoughts are truly an inspiration to all who are following your long, quiet journey. Smokey and Janet.

  2. Thank you for spending the evening with us and safe travels you are truly an inspiration.. Tom ,Mary,Troy and Pam.

  3. I am so glad to have met the four of you… so fun and thoughtful (and delicious ). Thanks for caring and sharing with the horses and me. Please keep in touch. Oh and I tried to tell people that Idaho sucks but no one believes me…
